Life changing decisions for that matter. Decisions such as, going to college. And preparing for life’s biggest responsibilities. During this critical time. Parents are usually on the edge of their seats. They are on the edge because they are afraid of hearing some things. Kids have graduated high school and some have received invitations to some of the best colleges in the country. Parents in most occasions, want to keep the college conversation going. They want to talk about their kids’ college choices with their friends and neighbors. College conversation is a good conversation. Self-improvement can mean different things to different people. However, I will define self-improvement as any effort you initiate as an individual. The effort adopted is meant for personal improvement. There are a lot of simple things you can do by yourself to improve any area in your life. The simplest idea you can begin with is drinking a lot of water. Water is a necessary fluid in your body. However, it is the least consumed. Different age groups and demographics drink water differently. According to data from Centers of Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), both children and adults drink less plain water. Different factors contribute to less consumption of water. One of those factors is income. According to 2015-2018 water consumption findings from CDC, households with lower income drink less plain water. Yet, drinking water every day plays a significant role in improving your health.

Drinking at least two glasses of plain water every day helps to eliminate dehydration. Dehydration has far-reaching consequences on your health. People who suffer from dehydration can experience any of the following symptoms. Overheating, changes in the mood, incoherent thinking, kidney stones, and constipation. If you have ever experienced any of these symptoms, you could be dehydrated. Initiating a simple routine of how to achieve the daily water consumption will help you fight dehydration. Dehydration threatens quality of your life. You can easily collapse while doing your important activities due to overheating. Making drinking water every day your self-improvement goal will improve your health significantly. You will not only live hydrated but also prevent unnecessary inconveniences on your schedule.

Picking a glass and pouring water in it sounds effortless. However, maintaining this practice is not simple. It requires discipline. Drinking two glasses of water or more requires priority. You need to prioritize drinking water every day. You need to make decisions of how often you drink that water. Time is always a factor. Your desk could be busy. And that can limit the number of times you drink water. Your tasks could be demanding. And you might not have enough time to move up and down. That is why you need to make drinking water every few hours your goal. If, you lean on less water every day. Consider increasing your water intake a self-improvement goal. Go from just one glass per day to two or three glasses per day. Decide the frequency of your water intake. Your frequency could be drinking water after every two hours. Choose a format that works for you. The more you stick with the routine, the better you become at it.

The most important ingredient you need to remember with self-improvement is that it is your own effort. You must involve your efforts to improve. Self-improvement does not need to be expensive. You can practice it during your downtime or lunch break. You just need to know what matters to you. You need to identify the area of priority. Anything that you think needs improvement can become your self-improvement priority. For example, if you consider your weight to be going out of line. Initiating simple self-improvement activities such as, doing push-ups every night will go a long way. Doing push-ups for ten minutes before bed might look insignificant. However, spreading those ten minutes across months might mean something. Your body would not remain the same. Something will change.

Taking action is key to succeeding in any self-improvement initiative. Knowing the area to improve is the first step. However, real improvement comes with taking action. Action makes you better. You don’t self-improve by wishing. You self-improve by doing. Do the activities that make you better. Walk for ten minutes every weekend. Read a chapter from your favorite book per day. Run for 30 minutes every evening. Whatever, your self-improvement goal. Action makes the difference. You just don’t succeed by thinking about it. You succeed by doing it often. Frequency creates a simple structure you can follow. That simple structure makes you better. This is what self-improvement means. Involving yourself in the outcomes you would like to see. If you would like to be more disciplined. Create time to fix your sticky areas.

Self-improvement can be a big or a small activity. However, to succeed, you need a working structure. You must make decisions. Those decisions should fit in your daily routines or activities. You need to know your needs to know what needs improvement. Functional self-improvement requires your knowledge. You must think of an area as a problem for you to create a solution. However, if you don’t see a problem. You have nothing to solve. In fact, you will have no reason to fix anything. You will consider yourself okay. You will see your life as progressing well. Self-improvement occurs only when a problem has been established. This happens after a time of reflection or self-audit.  You need to carry out these reflections and audits often.

Self-improvement is good for your life. Apart from making you feel better or become better. It creates a sense of urgency in you. It makes you see things that need change. And once you identify the thing that needs change, you take responsibility. Being a responsible person is a best practice life principle. It makes you swift and sensitive. You become uncomfortable with things that might harm your health. Responsibility also helps you come to terms with difficult truths about yourself. Facing challenging elements of your life pushes you to make difficult decisions. And that is what self-improvement is all about. Making difficult decisions about things that you don’t like talking about, or admitting to yourself.

Part of being a responsible person is speaking the truth or seeing reality. The more you lean towards becoming truthful. The more you are likely to solve some of your complex issues. Self-improvement is one strategy you can implement to solve a challenging issue in your life. The journey might not be exciting. However, it will be worth your time. Any time is the best time to start self-improvement. Just be willing to see what you don’t like seeing.
