ARE THEY REALLY NOTHING?

GOAL SETTING A college loving kid proving that he is not Nothing /Photo Courtesy /Tara Winstead Nothing? There comes a time in life when a kid has to grow up. And start making decisions. Life changing decisions for that matter. Decisions such as, going to college. And preparing for life’s biggest responsibilities. During this critical time. Parents are usually on the edge of their seats. They are on the edge because they are afraid of hearing some things. Kids have graduated high school and some have received invitations to some of the best colleges in the country. Parents in most occasions, want to keep the college conversation going. They want to talk about their kids’ college choices with their friends and neighbors. College conversation is a good conversation. Because most parents think that going to college is a window of opportunities. And to some extent it is, especially for those students who want to go to college. Kids that have already visualized the kind of professio...

WHY ARE YOU THINKING AND ACTING SLOWER?

Lack of Urgency

There is no sense of urgency in you. It does not matter whether you arrive next year, in ten years or never at all. You got no problem with making no progress at all. You are comfortable with insignificant steps. Steps that keep you in the same spot but disguised as progress. You are behaving as though, you have all the time to think slower and act slower. What is going on? Why lack of urgency? And what is the lack of urgency making you? Lazy? Mediocre or just you? This is how you operate, and you have no problem whether you are making progress or not. Everything is the same. You have problems but you are not in a hurry to fix them. You are comfortable. You have no issues nurturing problems. Perhaps with each new day, those problems will go away by themselves. Things will be okay. Your house will be in order. Your life will be fine. Everything will be safe.

All that needs to be done will be done. You sit down and commit to things that you know you will not do. You cannot be trusted. But still, you commit to doing some things. Things that other people want completed. Things that have deadlines. Activities, which require urgency. Activities that require seriousness. But you are thinking slower and acting slower. You are accepting standards, which make you a bad actor. An actor, who cannot be seen as an ally. You look like jokes in the eyes of people who want urgency. You seem lost. There is something wrong with you. And it seems like, you are the only person who does not see that wrong. You have normalized mediocrity. You have accepted low standards. You are not interested in making progress. You don’t want to make progress. You don’t see lack of urgency as a problem. A problem that carry the potential of exclusion.

A person that cannot be taken seriously. A person that cannot be trusted, even by his/her closet people. This is bad. You need to acknowledge that living without a sense of urgency is a problem. The world we live in today does not accommodate lack of urgency. It is super competitive. You can easily be left behind. And nobody will care that you are behind. People will keep moving forward. And you will be left alone moving in circles. Thinking that you are making progress. When in real sense, you are just stuck. Stuck in your own mess. Stuck in your indecisiveness. Stuck in low standards. Stuck in your unawareness. This is not good. Untangle yourself from thinking and acting slower. We don’t have this kind of world. No one will wait for you to make up your mind. People will keep going. They will continue to the next project.

They will solve the problem or problems that you were supposed to solve. Other people will take up your responsibility. You will become irrelevant in a busy world. Lack of urgency will make you marginalized. You will be living in your own head. Creating a world that no one wants to live in. A world of no progress. A world of no urgency. An insipid world. A world where nothing is important. A world where nothing matters. No one wants this kind of world because everything matters including you and your life. You just can’t be growing tall and doing nothing. You need to earn your position in this life. You need to make your presence known. You need to make your own mark. You need to have something going on for yourself. Be something. Something that can be trusted with responsibility. Have some urgency.

Arrive on Time

Start arriving on time. Start getting things done. Develop some level of urgency. Mean what you say. Stop thinking and acting slower. Arrive on time. Everything is important. Get things done. Get over your low standards. There is no world of slow thinkers and actors. There is a world of everyone. And in this world of everyone. You are supposed to make progress. You are supposed to dream. You are supposed to think. You are supposed to make decisions. You are supposed to solve problems. Don’t be asleep during the day. Wake up your mind. Tell your mind you are on a journey. And on this journey, anytime is not time. You cannot arrive next year or in ten years. You must make a decision. Be specific when you would like to arrive. Solve that problem today. Stop nurturing problems. Problems are not supposed to be nurtured.

Problems are meant to be solved. Find solutions. Have some level of urgency. Stop waking up because other people are waking up. Be specific. Have some reasons why you are waking up. Your own thought reasons. Reasons built around your needs. Reasons built around your responsibilities. Reasons built around adulthood. Reasons built around growth. Mom and dad are no longer in charge. You are in charge. Make some decisions. Solve some problems. You can no longer be comfortable with lack of urgency. Your dreams will die. Your life will stagnate. You will have nothing to show by the end of the day. You are not alive to do the absolute minimum. You are alive for a purpose. Find meaning in your life. Have some goals. Aspire for something. Don’t be tasteless. Don’t be characterless. Commit and get things done.

All the Time in the world

You don’t have all the time in the world. And don’t behave like you have all the time in the world. You don’t have that privilege. No one has that privilege. Be responsible. Get things done. Arrive on time. Live in urgency. Be swift. Be alive. Don’t move in circles. Make progress. Arrive somewhere. Make a difficult decision. Change. Stop interpreting the world using your low standards. That is not how people want to live. People don’t want to be slower. People don’t want to live in constant conditions. Something has to be important one day. Something has to be completed on time. A goal has to be set and met on time. Don’t be a liar. Don’t be slower. Level up. Stop marginalizing yourself. Be in the mainstream. Where the bustle and hustle of life is happening. Don’t create your own non-competitive world and compete in it.

You need to improve. You need to change. Start getting things done within set time. Start having standards. Have some goals. Dream a little bit. Find someone you admire. Watch how this person is living and doing things. You need to get better. You need to stop being comfortable with bare minimum. You are not alive to eat and sleep. You are alive for a reason. Fight the things that are holding you back. Things that are making you slower. Get rid of these burdens. If, it is lack of knowledge, seek knowledge. Find wisdom. Get some training. Start reading. Discover some films you can learn from. Find a role model. Learn from people who are making progress. Ask some questions. Ask how people are accomplishing somethings that you also want to accomplish. Don’t develop an attitude. Don’t be prejudiced. Open up your mind. Learn something. You don’t have all the time in the world. You just have enough time. Enough time, to get something done. Don’t think and act slower. Don’t get used to never arriving at all. Plan to arrive this time round. Embrace change.
